Offshore (novel)
Offshore (1979) is a novel by Penelope Fitzgerald. It won the Booker Prize for that year. It recalls her time spent on boats on the Thames in Battersea. The novel explores the liminality of people who do not belong to the land or the sea, but are somewhere in between. The epigraph, "che mena il vento, e che batte la pioggia, e che s'incontran con si aspre lingue" ("whom the wind drives, or whom the rain beats, or those who clash with such bitter tongues") comes from Canto XI of Dante's Inferno.

Life INSIDE The World's BIGGEST Offshore Oil Rig
The offshore drilling platform Berkut is one of the largest in the world. It is located 25 kilometers from Sakhalin Island on the shelf in the Sea of Okhotsk. This is a huge fully autonomous plant on giant reinforced concrete piles, which not only drills new wells, but also extracts several thousand tons of oil every day from a huge depth. The platform is able to withstand 18-meter waves, withstand temperatures down to -44 C° and the pressure of ice fields up to 2 meters thick. During the construction of the platform, for the first time in the world, a seismic protection system was used, which makes it possible to withstand an earthquake with a power of 9 points without loss of performance.

Offshore platforms, also referred to as oil platforms, are huge structures equipped with resources to drill wells and extract oil and gas deep inside the ocean. They boast storage facilities for crude and gas till they are transported to refineries, and sometimes may also have facilities to provide accommodation to the workforce. Depending on the requirements, an oil platform may be floating or fixed to the ocean floor.
Remote subsea wells can also be connected to a platform by pipelines. Offshore platforms are strongly built and are designed to last decades in the harsh environment. These platforms are usually build onshore and then transported to the drilling site.
Offshore platforms were first used in 1891 to drill submerged oil wells in the Grand Lake St. Mary's in Ohio.

The offshore drilling platform Berkut is one of the largest in the world. It is located 25 kilometers from Sakhalin Island on the shelf in the Sea of Okhotsk. This is a huge fully autonomous plant on giant reinforced concrete piles, which not only drills new wells, but also extracts several thousand tons of oil every day from a huge depth. The platform is able to withstand 18-meter waves, withstand temperatures down to -44 C° and the pressure of ice fields up to 2 meters thick. During the construction of the platform, for the first time in the world, a seismic protection system was used, which makes it possible to withstand an earthquake with a power of 9 points without loss of performance.

For better or for worse, the world runs on oil, and extracting it isn’t easy. That’s why we have offshore oil rigs to get the job done on a grand scale. These production platforms extract and process petroleum and natural gas that lie in rock formations deep beneath the seabed. These structures require an incredibly large crew and an even larger facility to accommodate them and will employ massive drills to dig for Liquid Gold. So you can imagine that some of these oil rigs can get pretty big. But some of that can reach astronomical sizes! So join us for today’s video, where we look at the top 15 largest offshore oil rigs.
